Father, the man with the most lovely and pathetic sides at the same time-- physical attractiveness, sexual ability, masculine... and that's all.
Boy, the character who represents "choicelessness" is the turning point of the tragedy.
The most impressive scene to me is the little boy forced to hide in the closet waited for a chance to steal something. When he felt the care and love within the family which he hadn't belonged to, he couldn't help weeping, tearing, bursting out crying.
The very end of this movie is also deep. The son stood by the river and his father with his new family walked to home unknowing the son just standing at the opposite side. You can almost see the light within the son's eyes. No words, but it still means a lot.
